Speakers: Bill Allcock, Software Engineer - Distributed Systems Laboratory, Argonne National Lab. Mike Jackson, Dr., University of Edinburgh. Dr. Ann Chervenak, USC Information Sciences Institute.
In this talk, we will present the Globus view of data services and describe the services that are currently available in GT4.0.2 as well as services planned for the future. In our discussions of current data services, we will summarize the capabilities of the following data services in the Globus Toolkit Version 4.0.2:
o GridFTP
o The Reliable File Transfer Servcie (RFT)
o The Replica Location Service (RLS)
o The Data Replication Service (DRS)
o The Data Access and Integration Service (DAIS)
GridFTP is an efficient data transport protocol, while the Reliable File Transfer Service (RFT) provides functionality for reliable multiple file movement. We will present an overview of the features and functionality of these components, performance data, as well as examples of how these services are used in real world projects.
The Replica Location Service (RLS) is a distributed registry service that records the locations of data copies and allows discovery of replicas. We will discuss the features of the RLS, the use of RLS in production Grid environments and summarize RLS performance and scalability.
The Data Replication Service uses the functionality of the RFT and RLS to provide controlled replication of files with automatic updates of replica catalogs.
The OGSA-DAI (OGSA Data Access and Integration) software provides data services to access relational and XML databases, as well as some types of structured file data resources. We will give an overview of the features and functionality of this service and examples of projects using OGSA-DAI.
We will conclude the talk with a discussion of how these services will evolve in the Globus Toolkit over the next year and our vision for future data services.
