SB4:  Sun Microsystems: Benefits of Sun Grid and Utility computing - oriented towards business benefits with technical focus.
09/11/2006, 4:45 PM - 5:30 PM

Speakers:
Jim Parkinson, VP of engineering, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Aisling Macrunnels, Director, Sun Grid Marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

The IT industry is moving towards more dynamic computing models that provide flexibility in usage combined with power, space and technology efficiency. Whether the use case is managed services, outsourcing, software as a service (SaaS) or raw compute cycles, vendors and customers need to utilize standardized building blocks that adapt and scale to their needs. Grid based utility computing is the way of the future for the IT industry, and Sun Microsystems is making significant R&D investments in grid related technologies and products. Sun claimed a leadership position in utility computing earlier this year with the launch of Sun Grid Compute Utility at Network.com, the first and only public grid computing utility available by a click through license on the Internet. Grid based utility computing delivers significant benefits to all involved. End users of IT services--whether large enterprises or small and medium businesses--benefit from reduced cost and complexity and increased flexibility relating to ownership, operation and maintenance of IT assets. Utility computing also promotes more flexibility for users and lets them reduce business risk. In her talk, Aisling MacRunnels, Sun's Sr. Director of utility computing, will discuss Sun's vision for grid based utility computing. She will provide details on the challenges of building out the Sun Grid, the massive IP that has been developed in providing and managing this secure multi-tenant environment and will highlight customer uses/benefits. Aisling will also discuss how industry partners can work with Sun on delivering the "future of computing."
