Speaker: Carl Kesselman, Director, Center for Grid Technologies, USC Information Sciences Institute.
Grid infrastructure is increasingly being used as the foundation for managing large-scale, heterogeneous IT environments. Whatever term one uses to describe the next generation of infrastructure management -- utility computing, real-time infrastructure, on-demand, etc. -- there is broad industry consensus that future IT success depends on the ability to effectively deliver services that are aligned with business demands. Given the variability and unpredictability of this demand, there is a need to create a more agile infrastructure where resources can be rapidly assembled and re-purposed for multiple tasks. Univa will present a case study from the life sciences industry where Globus-based solutions allow research environments to be rapidly created and replicated on demand to meet the stringent regulatory requirements of the new drug approval process. The result is direct top line growth for the business because the clock starts ticking when a new drug patent is issued, and any delay in getting the drug to market impacts its revenue potential.
