Wolfgang Boch
Head of Unit Grid Technologies, European Commission.

Wolfgang Boch, is working with the European Commission for more than 15 years on Information and Communication Technologies, within the EU Framework Programmes for Research. Since January 2003 he is the Head of Unit for "Grids Technologies" a newly created unit and initiative in the context of Framework Programme VI (2002-2006).

His background is in Electrical Engineering and Informatics with specialisation in feedback and control Systems. He graduated with a Masters Degree from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.

He worked for 10 years in R&D in the aerospace and avionics industry before joining the European Commission. His work in industry has led to three European patents related to digital data signal processing methods, and stochastic and numerical algorithms.

In the Commission he has held previous management positions on RTD actions related to Transport and Environmental Telematics Applications. In the 5th Framework Programme (1999-2002) he was Head of Unit responsible for Telematics Applications for the Environment.

At present, Wolfgang Boch is in charge of managing the area of Grid Technologies Research in the Information Society Technology programme with a total funding contribution by the European Union of 130 M€ in FPVI.

His responsibilities include the promotion of the development of Next Generation Grid technologies towards the invisible Grid, service-oriented architectures and knowledge utilities, and the move of Grids from science towards its use in industry and business. His special interest includes, as well the establishment and promotion of strengthened European and international collaboration in Grid research, as ICT take-up and innovation. He has been one of the early promoters of European Technology Platforms, which led to the establishment of NESSI, the networked European Initiative on Software, Grids and Services.

In 2004 he has become a member of the Advisory Group of GGF (Global Grid Forum) and in 2005 his unit was given a mandate to explore and develop in a pioneering role a strategic partnership on Grid research between the European Union and China.
