Biography
Alan Blatecky
VP of Information Technology at MCNC, University of North Carolina.

Alan Blatecky is the Deputy Director of the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) - University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Duke University and NC State University. He was the Executive Director of Research and Programs at the San Diego Supercomputing Center (2003-2004); Program Director at the National Science Foundation within the Computer, Information Sciences and Engineering Directorate (2001-2003) as well as Acting Division Director for ANIR. While at NSF, Alan developed and managed the NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) as well as developing new programs in Experimental networks and testbeds. Blatecky was Vice President for Information Technology at MCNC in North Carolina (1990-2001) and helped establish and develop NCREN (North Carolina Research and Education Network), the North Carolina Supercomputing Center, the NC Information Highway, the NC GigaPop, the North Carolina Networking Initiative, and the Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center.

Blatecky has focused on establishing, developing and operating a variety of advanced high performance networking and computing research programs and initiatives. He has served on a variety of state, national and international review boards and commissions. He is currently a member of the Global Grid Forum Steering Group and serves as chair of the Industry Advisory Board for the Enabling Grids for E-Science in Europe (EGEE) project. He is heavily involved in the research, development and deployment of cyberinfrastructure and grid technologies, including the development of multidisciplinary projects and collaborations. Blatecky has 4 Masters Degrees including an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business (Duke University) and a Master of Arts from Duke.
